How the Fund works

The Regional Filming Fund is no longer a standalone funding program. 

Applicants seeking Regional Filming Fund support must apply at the same time as an application to either: 

Applications are assessed concurrently, with the Regional Filming Fund retaining its own budget and assessment criteria focused on regional outcomes.

Program objectives

The purpose of the Regional Filming Fund is to drive sustained economic and industry growth across Regional NSW by incentivising screen production outside metropolitan areas. It supports projects that create local jobs, build skills and capacity, and strengthen regional businesses and supply chains, while increasing the use and visibility of regional locations. The fund is designed to ensure that the benefits of the state’s expanding screen production activity are shared more broadly, delivering clear, measurable outcomes for regional communities and value for NSW Government investment. 

The objectives are to: 

Increase economic activity in Regional NSW by encouraging NSW screen productions to film outside of metropolitan areas 
Enable Regional NSW to benefit from the growth of film and television production in the State 
Support sustainable employment, skills development and capacity building for Regional NSW screen practitioners and businesses 
Strengthen the use of Regional NSW locations, workforce and services through meaningful on location production 
Ensure NSW Government investment delivers value for money and demonstrable regional economic outcomes

Key eligibility requirements

Regional Filming Fund applications will only be considered when submitted within a Production Fund or Made in NSW – Local Fund application. Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of the relevant program; failure to do so will render the Regional Filming Fund application ineligible.

The application and project submitted must:

be filming on location for a minimum of ten shooting days in any part of Regional NSW
meet the qualifying NSW Regional spend (QRPE) being: 
$750,000 for narrative feature films (including telemovies) and scripted drama series (including children’s television)
$150,000 for all documentary productions, direct-to-audience series and commissioned online series.

Applicants may request up to 10% of the budgeted QRPE, capped at $200,000.

Why RFF has changed

The Regional Filming Fund has been integrated with Screen NSW's Made in NSW – Local Fund and Production Fund to provide a more streamlined application process and enable coordinated assessment of production and regional outcomes.

The updates ensure support on productions capable of delivering significant regional economic activity, employment opportunities and long-term industry benefits for Regional NSW communities.
